Hello Beach Ball guests,

We visited Botany Bay for the first time in March of 2022. It was a wonderful time of the year to go. There were no bugs, not too crowded and the temperature was just right for an adventure. The drive into the site is stunning. You drive down a long dirt road lined with Southern Oak trees, moss, and all types of SC vegetation.

We received our free car tag once we were almost there and off we went exploring. We were greeted by some volunteers with a shell scavenger hunt list. We were excited to try and find and identify as many as we could that were on these two lists.

You need to pay close attention to the tide chart for this to work out in your favor. We timed it perfectly. Once on the beach, the beauty of the protected shells, the old sun bleached trees, the magic of watching our children and their friends discover all of this for the first time was incredible. They loved it. They mad a hut, collected all of the shells that they could, knowing that they couldn't take them home. They found simple joy in placing the found shells on trees, and making decorations out of them for the next person to find.

This free activity is a gem. We hope that you have the time to make it out there while you stay at The Beach Ball!

Sincerely,

The Sullivans

A 3,363 Acre Plantation Heritage Oceanside Nature Preserve and Wildlife Management Area. DNR acquired the property and opened it to the public in 2008. Worth the 18 minute drive. Once you have arrived, there is a kiosk to pick up a free day pass for your car. This is truly a must do when staying on Edisto. This is a beautiful adventure waiting for you. Gather all the shells and sharks teeth you can find. But, make sure to leave them there for the next guests. Take part in arranging shells in the sun bleached trees. Taking anything with you is prohibited. A wonderful spot for photo opportunities. Probably a good idea to go outside the peak of summertime heat and bugs. Pack sunscreen and bug spray. No bathroom…Closed on Tuesdays and for special events.
